Petrified Forest National Park sits among the Painted Desert in Northeast Arizona. The otherworldly landscape provides a vibrant and unique view that is unparalleled. Look closely and see remnants of the past - from prehistoric to contemporary times. Walk along the fossilized forests and trees - and look, but don't take!
Get Moving: Crystal Forest - Along the flat and seemingly barren landscape is a pull off spot to stop your car and get out. You've arrived at Crystal Forest, a small loop trail that passes along the remains of a pre-historic desert. It's hard to imagine, but a dense rain forest used to exist where a desert now lies.
See the Sun: Jasper Forest - Perched upon high ground, the parking lot at Jasper Forest gives visitors a distancing view of the forest remnants below and an unobstructed view towards the western horizon. Stop here for a sunset! Hikers can also hike down into the valley and walk along the giant logs/stumps of petrified wood.
Gram-Worthy: Newspaper Rock - Straight out of a history book, Newspaper Rock serves as a testament to the communication of the indigenous folk from hundreds of years ago. Newspaper Rock served as a billboard for travel news, trading info, and even as a wall for those chronicling their daily life (such as hunting). The historical rock has stood the test of time and gives visitors a small glimpse into a storied and beautiful culture.
Soul Recharge: Painted Desert Inn Trail - The Petrified Desert Inn has been a staple of the Petrified Forest landscape for nearly 100 years. Many will stop at the Inn, but only a few take the trail just past the Inn. Follow the trail down into the valley below and step into absolute serenity. This trail is one of only a handful of spots where I was alone with my thoughts at a National Park (which is really, REALLY hard to come by).
Reason to Return: Route 66 - Petrified Forest National Park is the only National Park that has Route 66 running through it. It is worth spending a few days in the area to try the food, drive the scenic route, and see all of the neon!
