Grand Canyon National Park

Some places are just indescribable. Grand Canyon National Park fits this billing. The sheer vastness and beauty of the horizon-stretching canyon is a place that everyone needs to see at least once in their lifetime.

Get Moving: South Kaibab Trail - The South Kaibab Trail is the essential go-to in the south rim of the Grand Canyon. This trail hits all of the great spots while traversing to the bottom of the canyon.

See the Sun: Literally anywhere. The challenge of the Grand Canyon is privacy - no matter when you go, it will be busy. The further away from the parking lot, the better. But no matter the location, a great view is typically right in front of you.

Gram Worthy: Mather Point - This place is a great stop for those in a hurry or unable to hike long distances. Mather Point captures the essence of the park without having to hike down into the canyon. Be mindful - this is probably the most frequented area of the south rim. If you're looking for the peace and quiet, this is not the spot for you.

Soul Recharge: Cedar Ridge - You've got to earn this spot! Take the South Kaibab trail head for nearly 1.5 miles to the ridge. Many will stop halfway (at Ooh Ahh Point) and turn around. Keep going! Cedar Ridge is not as populated, and has a restroom. Be mindful that you will descend over 1,000 feet- going up will take longer.

Best Drive: Phoenix to Grand Canyon - If you are able, you absolutely must do the drive from Phoenix to the south rim of the Grand Canyon. The trip takes roughly 3.5 hours, but feels like 30 minutes. The landscape drastically changes from barren desert to thousands of Saguaro cacti to red rock buttes to alpine forests, and finally the Grand Canyon. Be sure to set aside time for Sedona and Flagstaff on the drive.

Reason to Return: Phantom Ranch - Located at the very bottom of the Grand Canyon is Phantom Ranch (7.5 mile hike). Can you imagine what it would be like to sleep under the stars at the base of the canyon? Phantom Ranch makes that a reality! The hike down is quite strenuous, so hikers must be prepared and fit enough to take on the challenge. Waiting at the bottom is lodging (cabin and dorm style) as well as food (breakfast and dinner). But consider yourself lucky if you snag a spot - Phantom Ranch has a lottery system that requires a a little luck to secure a spot.
