Indiana Dunes was America's newest National Park in 2019. The location is unapologetically Midwestern; natural wonders nestled among small towns and industrial parks. Those visiting will be pleasantly surprised at what this park has to offer.
Get moving: Dune Succession Trail Loop - This short trail (1.1 miles) gives you a taste of everything the park has to offer - boardwalks, dense forests, dunes, marshland, and the beach. You will constantly have to remind yourself that you are in Indiana. As you walk under the canopy of deciduous leaves, your feet are sifting through the fine sand.
See the Sun: Mt. Baldy - As you wind down the curvy access road to the parking lot, you'll abruptly face a massive sand dune (that edges closer to the parking lot by the year). It is very tempting to want to run up the dune by the parking lot.
Dont.
The sand isn't packed down, and can swallow hikers. Quickly. Instead, follow the trail, which gradually ascends. As you approach the precipice, it looks like you are walking towards the clouds. Admire the beach view from the top, or be adventurous and scale down the hill.
Gram-Worthy: Century of Progress Homes - Drive back in time by visiting the Century of Progress Homes along the lake shore. Originally built in Chicago for the 1933 World's Fair, the homes were designed to reflect home architecture 100 years prior to 1933 and their guess as to what the future held in design innovations. Park and walk along the beach with the houses as a backdrop.
Soul Recharge: Great Marsh Trail - This flat trail is a great way to disconnect from the stressors of life by connecting with nature. Walk up to a lookout point and look across the marsh, or walk along the tall grass. There is a solid chance you'll see or hear the wildlife as you trek through. The trail is basically at (or below) water level - so wear water proof shoes!
Reason to Return: 3-Dune Challenge - Indiana Dunes National Park's claim to fame is the 3-Dune Challenge. The goal is to summit Mt. Tom, Mt. Jackson, and Mt. Holden. Each dune reaches nearly 200 feet in height and are the tallest dunes in the park!
