Less than 30 miles from the busy streets of Cleveland, Ohio lies Cuyahoga Valley National Park. This diverse and reclaimed land serves as the perfect escape from the city.
Get Moving: The Ledges - The Ledges at CVNP provide for a unique experience. Hikers start the trail head at a higher elevation and quickly descend into a mossy and shaded gorge. Hikers can traverse through the massive boulders that shrink those standing next to the rocks. The loop is a little under 2 miles (1.8) and is relatively moderate in difficulty.
Best Drive: Ironically, the best drive in CVNP is not in a car. The popular way to get around the park is by bike. The path is currently 85 miles in length, and extends well beyond the parameters of the park.
See the Sun: Ledges Overlook - While the majority of the Ledges trail system has hikers down in a gorge looking up at the cliffs above, the Ledges Overlook provides a much different view. Climb to the top and get an unobstructed view of the surrounding Cuyahoga Valley.
Must See Spot: Brandywine Falls - Brandywine Falls tends to be the most associated spot with CVNP. The 65-foot wonder is a close drive from the Boston Store Visitor Center. Hikers can elect to take the scenic route and loop around, concluding at the falls. For those not able or wanting the quick reward, a few quick steps down and along the rocky edge takes hikers to the top of the falls.
Gram Worthy: Beaver Marsh - Beaver Marsh serves as a reminder that Mother Nature always wins. Originally an auto repair shop, the area was (literally) litered with scrap metal, toxic chemicals, and unpleasant views. In the 1980's, the site was cleaned and native species were re-introduced to the area. Within no time, wildlife returned that had not been seen for years. Beaver Marsh runs along the Ohio and Erie Canal Towpath, as well as the old canal. Walk along the boardwalk and look out for local wildlife.
Soul Recharge: Kendall Lake - For a slower change of pace, check out Kendall Lake. This tranquil lake is the result of a project that restored logging land. Folks today can picnic at the shelter house, fish in the lake, or just sit along the shore and take in the views.
Reason to Return: Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad - Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad is arguably the most iconic aspect of CVNP. Multiple stops and stations throughout the park make this option very accessible. You can even load your bike on the train and partake in a ride. Check out the train whenever; it runs all year long.
