The Badlands, located outside of Wall, South Dakota, is probably unlike any terrain you've seen before. The sand castle-esque formations have you feeling like you're visiting another planet.
NOTE: Due to the landscape of the terrain, many of the trails at Badlands National Parks are not marked - be aware of your surroundings while hiking so that you know the way back.
Gram-Worthy: Big Badlands Overlook - This will be one of the first sights you come across if you are traveling from the Eastern entrance of the park. The overlook is essentially a mini-Grand Canyon. An accessible boardwalk makes this a great view for everyone!
Must-See Spot: Wall Drug - Folks come from far and wide to see just what the heck "Wall Drug" is. Fair enough, considering you will see consistent billboards for it starting from over 500 miles away. A roadside attraction on steroids, Wall Drugs has shopping, restaurants, and something for everyone. Come see what everyone is talking about!
Get Moving: Notch Trail - One of the most exhilarating trails at the Badlands is the Notch Trail. Start by traversing through the valley with the mountainous terrain surrounding you. Before you know it, you face a wooden ladder. Scale up the ladder over 100 feet and continue the trail above the valley.
Wildlife: Prairie Dogs - Be on the lookout in the Badlands for these little critters - but don't blink! The elusive prairie dogs are faster than you think.
See-The-Sun: When hiking Notch Trail, be sure to hike to the very end of the trail. This allows for a cliff view of the grassy prairie as far as the eye can see. Your view is southward, so stop here for a sunrise or sunset!
