Spend a weekend in the Gorge

Need a weekend away? If you're in the Midwest and looking to unplug while recharging, look no further than Red River Gorge.

Located near Slade, Kentucky (an hour east from Lexington), Red River Gorge offers views, hiking, good eats, and fun for all ages. Here are a few of the reasons why the Gorge is worth your time:

1) Hiking

Red River Gorge is a phenomenal go-to spot for hiking. With trails ranging from under a mile in length to other trails tallying over 10 miles, there is a variety of options for all skill levels. With arches, rivers, and overlooks, you will have constant and changing views.

2) Nada Tunnel

Completed in the late 1800s/early 1900s, this nearly 900-foot tunnel served as a railroad passageway. At least one person died during the carving out of the tunnel. Today, passengers can (barely) squeeze their cars into the one-lane road as they are traveling through the park.

3) Natural Bridge

Who knew that Kentucky had giant natural arches, much like the ones you hear about out west? Red River Gorge offers views of several arches, scattered throughout the park. Natural Bridge is by far the most popular (and most grand). There are a couple of ways to see Natural Bridge - the easiest hike is roughly .75 miles. As you reach the arch, take the stairs to the top and see the 360-degree view of exposed rocks, treelines, and the valley below.

4) Skylift

Have a younger family? Not feeling up to the hike? Want to see Red River Gorge in a different perspective? Try the Skylift!

Much like a ski lift, passengers can park their car, walk to the lift, and hop on. The ride last roughly 5 minutes and takes you above the treeline, up and over the rocky cliff side, and directly to the top of Natural Bridge! At the base of the lift are restrooms and a gift shop.

5) Miguels

No Red River Gorge trip is complete without stopping at Miguels Pizza. This restaurant nearly has a cult following - if you don't stop, you're in the minority. Known for their delicious build-your-own pizza, this stop has something for everyone. Miguels is also a hub for campers, hikers, and climbers - there are campsites, a climbing store, basketball hoops, showers, and communal spaces - come stop in and see what the buzz is about!
